The WSET Level 2 Wine is an intermediate level course. You don’t need to have taken Level 1, however it does build on it and provides a clear pathway for further learning.
- You do not need any previous experience, but it is suitable for industry professionals and those with a really keen interest in wine who have some existing knowledge already (it is much less basic than the Level 1)
- You’ll gain enviable knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce
- The course also covers the impact of climate, soils & winemaking as well as learning how to taste wine professionally
- You’ll be able to talk about wine confidently & become a recognised expert!
- We have traditional, classroom based in person WSET Level 2 Wine courses led by one of our expert educators in Manchester
- Alternatively, you can study more at your own pace with an online course. Dates starting every month are available, and you can take the exam online remotely too (subject to minimum technical requirements)

Who is This Course For?
This is an intermediate course. It builds on the Level 1 knowledge, but you do not need to have taken the Level 1 course before enrolling. You will learn about a wide range of wines – the regions in which the principal and significant grape varieties are grown and the styles of wine they produce, as well as the impact of climate, soils and winemaking.
You’ll also learn how to confidently describe wines having tasted over 40 samples and understand the factors that impact their style and quality.
It is useful for those working in or looking to work for pubs, bars or licenced wholesalers or retailers selling a range of wine. It can also be helpful for younger people looking to start out their careers in the industry. You will need to complete the Level 2 before joining a Level 3 Wines course.
It is also suitable for keen wine enthusiasts who know a bit about wine already and makes a great gift.
Additional Information
You need to be over 18 (there’s wine-tasting involved) and we provide you with extra support in the form of our exclusive study guides. These are free to Northern Wine School students and have been developed to really help you with your studies.
The classroom course ends in a paper based exam. If studying online or self-study options, the exam takes place online. It is a 50 question multiple-choice exam which lasts for one hour. You must score 55% or above to pass. Those who pass will get a certificate and lapel pin and the right to use the associated WSET Certified logo. WSET Level 2 Award in Wines Courses
Classroom Course
Our WSET Wines Level 2 classroom courses take place over three consecutive days, (condensed format), 3 consecutive weeks (3 week version) or 9 evenings (over 9 consecutive weeks). We offer them in central Manchester & Liverpool, or you can study remotely online. They are run by a WSET Certified Wine Educator. You will be given the WSET Wines 2 Study Guide, a manual and a specification and SAT tasting card.
We supply the wines that you will be tasting (except the online format excluding samples)- there are over 40, including Premier & Grand Cru wines, fine dessert wines and premium sparkling and fortified wines.
You’ll take the paper based exam at the end of the final session or an online exam for remote courses. You have free access to our WSET Wines 2 study guides so you can consolidate your learning and practice before the day.

Online Course
This is a five-week course with a choice of start dates and is taught via the WSET Digital Classroom. It’s the same syllabus as the classroom course and you are given weekly activities, but you can study at your own pace. We will provide you with a list of wines to source for the tastings.
You will be sent the WSET Wines 2 Study Guide, a manual and a specification and SAT tasting card. We provide support via email and Skype (should you wish). The course materials are available for a year after the course has ended.
You also have free access to our WSET Wines 2 study guides so you can consolidate your learning and practice before the day. The exam is online, and we will register you for a date that suits you.
